Safety Rules and Precautions In The Laboratory



Here are the Instructions, Safety Rules and Precautions in the Laboratory:
  1. Read and follow the laboratory instructions, procedures carefully given in your manual.
  2. Never perform unassigned experiments.
  3. Never let yourself to work alone in the laboratory.  You must be with a companion or with the presence of an instructor.
  4. Keep a thorough record of the observations and data gathered during the laboratory work on the allowed spaces after each experiment and correlate your lecture notes with the results obtained in the procedures.
  5. Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the working area at all times.
  6. Keep up the laboratory working area from your personal things, bags, etc.
  7. Report immediately any accident which may occur in the laboratory to your instructor.
  8. Do not eat, drink or smoke inside the laboratory.
  9. Never touch chemicals with your bare hands nor taste them unless directed to do so because most chemicals are poisonous.
  10. Wash off with plenty of water any spilled acid or corrosive chemicals to avoid accident.
  11. Always read the label on the reagent bottles before using the right chemical for the experiment.
  12. Use a clean spatula for each solid reagent for an experiment.
  13. Never return unused reagent to its container, be it solid or a liquid.
  14. Never attempt to weigh a chemical directly on the balance pan to avoid accident.
  15. Covers of reagent bottles must be laid upside down on the table.
  16. Most organic solvents are flammable so keep them away from an open flame.
  17. Dispose liquid chemicals or solutions in the sink and flush with plenty of water.
  18. Solid chemicals, broken pieces of glass and waste papers must be thrown into the waste can.
  19. Wash all apparatus used in the experiment before returning to the stock room.  Also see to is that gas cocks, faucets and lights are switched off before leaving.
